PSC Inc. Introduces Hybrid Mobile Computer for RFID and Barcode Scanning

Sept. 23, 2005 -- PSC Inc. has introduced a new multi-use, EPC-compliant, mobile hybrid computer designed to read both RFID tags and bar codes. As the latest product offering in PSC's Falcon series of products, this wireless computer is supports mandate-focused suppliers and companies that require a specific closed-loop solution.

Targeted for retail and supply chain organizations, the Falcon 5500 is expected to help improve the customer's experience by creating a more efficient inventory management process that minimizes out-of-stock items. In addition, it can help build revenue by increasing inventory turns, improving order-fill rates and lowering warehouse operating costs.

"Recent industry mandates increasingly highlight RFID as the transforming technology which will enable retailers, distributors and supply chain managers to more quickly and accurately manage inventories and merchandise at the item, case and pallet levels," said Matt Schler, PSC's general manager and vice president of Mobile & Wireless and Industrial Scanning. "The Falcon 5500 enables users to frequently and regularly collect data on their inventory levels, increasing receiving and shipping efficiency and rapidly locating misplaced items."

The Falcon 5500 is used by sweeping the device across merchandise to read RFID tags. The collected information can be used by the store to replenish or adjust stock levels as needed. This provides more efficient and centralized control of product offerings and availability. The new Falcon 5500 is currently in use at a major national retail chain and is being evaluated by other organizations for future implementation

Read rates of EPC Class 0 tags using the Falcon 5500 have been clocked at over 400 tags in less than 90 seconds with nearly 100% accuracy in the field. In comparison, this same inventory using bar codes would take between 10 and 25 minutes.

PSC has joined Intermec Technologies Corp.'s Rapid Start RFID intellectual property licensing program to accelerate adoption of this growing technology. The Rapid Start program identifies licensees before broad-scale Gen2 RFID implementations begin later this year and eliminates uncertainty about who is licensed to use this technology during ongoing vendor selection processes.
