Symbol Adds Entry Level Device to New Mobile Computing Line

July 24, 2005 -- Symbol Technologies Inc.'s MC1000 mobile computer is low-priced addition to its MC family of rugged hand-held devices.
"The new MC1000 handheld computer provides an enterprise mobility tool to address our supply chain and customer demand chain needs," said Kevin Huang, IT operations manger, ICI Paints. "With a highly ergonomic and lightweight design, the MC1000 provides an affordable solution to reduce employee training requirements and increase productivity and profitability."
The new Windows CE-based device can be used for inventory management, stock checking, delivery confirmation and other scan-intensive applications.
The MC1000 includes a linear laser scanner, 32MB of RAM, a 240-by-240 monochrome display, and is IP54 rated.
The MC1000 mobile computer can be equipped with Symbol's Mobility Services Platform (MSP) to collect and monitor product information and then deliver data to a centralized Symbol MSP console. MSP enables enterprise operations personnel to rapidly deploy the MC1000 mobile computer and provision software upgrades and fixes with a single command.
"As a global market leader in rugged mobile computing, Symbol is further expanding its product line to offer a handheld computer that provides emerging markets and small to medium-sized businesses with an enterprise tool to meet business needs," said Chester "Chet" Pribonic, vice president and general manager of mobile computing, Symbol Technologies. "Symbol aimed to design the MC1000 to be more user-friendly and versatile than other value-priced handhelds on the market and to deliver a total enterprise mobility system that can help organizations reduce costs, improve productivity, and increase profits."
Symbol has revamped its mobile computing line over the past several years, first releasing the high-end MC9000, followed by the MC3000 mid-range device. The MC1000 addresses a part of the market that, according to Brian Viscount, vice president of product marketing for mobile computers at Symbol, the company hasn't developed a new product for in some time.
Symbol is also targeting the device at markets outside the U.S., like Asia and Latin America, which have traditionally been served with low-cost devices based on proprietary operating systems.
