August 13, 2005 -- King's Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) in Ashland, Ky., is using a new RFID-based inventory management system to track supplies, drugs, assets and patients in its cardiac catheterization laboratories.
The system tracks devices the cardiac, electrophysiology and vascular catheterization labs of KDMC's Heart and Vascular Center. Currently, the labs are located on the second and fourth floors of the medical center. The new system automatically tracks supply data in both areas, including expiration dates, product recalls, and quantities of items.
"In general terms, this system is similar to what is used in retail stores, to ensure that products are in the right places, that they are used in a timely manner and that the correct items are charged," said David Layne, director of finance for the KDMC Heart and Vascular Center. He added that the system eliminates manual compliance and ensures every used item is billed for, and items are automatically reordered when used.
"Research shows hospitals that leverage technology have better patient outcomes than other facilities," said Brian Taylor, Information Technology specialist for the KDMC Heart and Vascular Center. "Technology can play a vital role in improving quality of care. This is a big step forward to help staff and physicians manage supplies better, improve business practices and provide state-of-the-art patient care."
